Bank Manager Collapses and Dies During Marathon in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: K.R. Ashik, a 47-year-old senior manager at HDFC Bank in Kollam and a resident of Mannamoola, Peroorkada, collapsed and died during a marathon event held in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday morning. The tragic incident occurred during his participation in the Green Marathon Expo, which commenced from Shankhumugham.

Ashik was competing in the 21-kilometer category of the marathon. He reportedly collapsed near Valiyaveli Church after covering a portion of the race route from Shankhumugham. Organizers and local residents immediately administered CPR and rushed him to a nearby private hospital. However, despite their efforts, Ashik could not be revived. He was known to be a regular participant in marathon events.

Following the incident, several participants raised serious concerns about significant safety lapses in the organization of the marathon. They alleged that the early morning event lacked adequate lighting on the roads and proper traffic control measures. Furthermore, participants reported a scarcity of volunteers in various sections of the route, with many claiming to have narrowly avoided accidents with vehicles during the run. The Thumba police have registered a case in connection with the incident and have initiated an investigation.

K.R. Ashik was the son of the late Abdul Rasheed and Sharafunnisa. He is survived by his wife, Majitha, who is a teacher, and their two children, Aman and Ashima. Ashik’s mortal remains were interred at the Palayam Muslim Juma Masjid cemetery.
