Power Restrictions Implemented in Kerala: Up to 30-Minute Cuts Expected

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Facing a severe energy crisis, KSEB has officially decided to implement power restrictions across the state. Under a ‘Peak Load Management’ plan, electricity supply will be regulated for durations ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. To minimize public inconvenience, the Board has announced that consumers will be notified of power interruptions via SMS.
The decision was finalized during a high-level KSEB Core Committee meeting convened to address the widening gap between power demand and supply. By implementing strategic load shedding, the Board aims to prevent a total grid failure as consumption reaches unprecedented levels. This move comes on the heels of the Regulatory Commission’s approval to purchase 250 MW of additional power from the national exchange at a price cap of ₹10 per unit through short-term contracts.
The crisis has been fueled by an intense heatwave, which has pushed the state’s electricity usage to record-breaking heights. On April 18, daily consumption peaked at a staggering 117.16 million units. KSEB officials have urged the public to practice extreme caution with electricity usage, particularly during peak evening hours, to help stabilize the state’s power situation.
