Mundathikode Fireworks Tragedy: Death Toll Mounts to 17

Another victim succumbs to burns as DNA tests identify remains of those missing in the blast

THRISSUR: The death toll from the catastrophic explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikode has risen to 17. The latest victim, identified as Rakesh, a resident of Thrissur, passed away early this morning at the Thrissur Medical College Hospital.

Rakesh had been battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining nearly 85% burns in the blast. His death follows the passing of two others recently: Unnikrishnan from Edappal and the fireworks licensee, Mundathikode Satheesan, both of whom succumbed to their injuries over the past few days.

Missing Persons Identified via DNA Testing Reports indicate that the remains of four individuals who went missing following the explosion have been identified. Authorities utilized DNA testing to verify the remains collected from the blast site, bringing clarity to the identities of the deceased.

Background of the Tragedy The horrific incident occurred on Tuesday, April 21, at approximately 3:20 PM. The explosion took place while fireworks were being manufactured for the Thiruvambady section in preparation for the Thrissur Pooram. The blast was so powerful that it razed the manufacturing shed and caused extensive damage to the surrounding area. Several others remain in critical condition as they continue to undergo treatment for severe burn injuries.
