Aroor-Thuravoor Elevated Highway: Tarring Works Progress in Eramallur, Commuters Await Completion

KOCHI: Tarring work has commenced in the Eramallur section of the much-anticipated Aroor-Thuravoor elevated national highway project, marking a significant step forward for the development of National Highway 66. Residents and commuters hope that the completion of this stretch will greatly ease traffic congestion in the busy Eramallur area.

The six-lane elevated highway is being constructed above the existing Kochi-Alappuzha national highway. Spanning approximately 13 to 13.15 kilometers from the Aroor junction to the Thuravoor junction, the structure is supported by single pillars installed along the center of the road.

Eramallur, located roughly halfway between Aroor and Ezhupunna, serves as a critical and high-traffic junction on National Highway 66. Authorities have also proposed establishing a major toll plaza at this location to cater to long-distance travelers moving between Kochi, Alappuzha, and beyond.

Officials had previously announced that service roads along the elevated highway would be tarred, and temporary traffic regulations were implemented during the construction period. Vehicles traveling between Kochi and Alappuzha were diverted to local roads to ensure the national highway remained operational while work was underway.

While the project’s progress has been slow due to various technical hurdles, the commencement of tarring in selected segments indicates that construction is moving into its final stages.

The Eramallur region has previously witnessed serious safety concerns linked to the project. In November 2025, a tragic accident occurred when concrete girders collapsed onto a pickup van near Eramallur, resulting in the death of the driver. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was registered in connection with the incident.

Throughout the construction phase, Eramallur has faced severe traffic disruptions. Frequent traffic bottlenecks from the Aroor bypass to the Eramallur junction—caused by construction work, narrow lanes, and equipment failures—have significantly impacted daily commuters, including students, traveling to Kochi, Cherthala, and nearby coastal villages.

Once the Eramallur section is completed and opened to the public, motorists can expect a smoother drive with clear lane markings. If safety and drainage issues are effectively addressed, the elevated highway promises to make travel via Kochi faster and safer for all.
