Construction of New Three-Lane Railway Overbridge at Edappally to Resume Today

KOCHI: Construction of the new railway overbridge at Edappally is set to resume on April 24. With railway authorities clearing the previously existing hurdles, the project has received a fresh impetus. The overbridge is envisaged as part of the national highway development in Kerala, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on the busy Kodungallur-Edappally route.
The new overbridge is being constructed parallel to the existing two-lane bridge. According to previous Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), the new structure will feature three lanes and span a length of 607 meters. Once completed, authorities hope it will significantly accelerate the development of the 26.3-kilometer national highway stretch from Kodungallur to Edappally.
Initial construction activities for the overbridge began in May 2023. However, the project faced delays due to the time taken to secure necessary approvals from the railway department. Specifically, the delay stemmed from difficulties in obtaining clearances for traffic regulations required while carrying out construction work over and near railway tracks.
Authorities have now confirmed that the construction company has received the necessary approvals for traffic regulation. Consequently, full-scale construction activities will resume starting April 24. Assuming favorable conditions, the project is targeted for completion by the end of this year.
The Edappally overbridge is a critical infrastructure project for daily commuters traveling along the national highway toward Kochi. Currently, severe traffic congestion is a common occurrence at the junction and near the existing bridge. The completion of the new three-lane overbridge is expected to substantially reduce travel times for buses, trucks, and private vehicles.
Furthermore, national highway authorities are exploring the possibility of constructing an underpass in the same area. The realization of such a system would provide dedicated lanes for different modes of transport, thereby streamlining traffic flow and providing a better experience for travelers.
During the construction phase, traffic restrictions near the railway line will be necessary. While precise diversion points and alternative routes have not yet been announced to the public, commuters are advised to expect temporary traffic congestion around Edappally as construction materials and workforce occupy sections of the road.
Travelers, including students and office employees, may need to account for additional travel time. Departing earlier for work or classes is advised to avoid potential delays. It is certain that adjustments in the area will be guided by local traffic updates from national highway and police officials in the coming months.
