Government Issues Safety Guidelines to Prevent Snakebites in Schools

Kochi: The government has directed that school children’s bags and shoes should not be kept outside classrooms in a manner that allows snakes to enter them. This directive is part of a draft safety guideline submitted by the government to the High Court, which also includes measures such as ensuring that school buildings and premises are free from conditions conducive to snakes entering and residing.

During a meeting convened by the Chief Secretary, it was suggested that a study is necessary to develop anti-venom for a broader range of snake species for more effective snakebite treatment. Furthermore, the meeting recommended that snakebites be included in the list of diseases that must be reported to health authorities. These discussions follow a petition filed by Kulathoor Jaisingh, which a division bench, including the Chief Justice, is currently considering. The petition demands enhanced safety in schools in the aftermath of a snakebite incident involving a student in Bathery.

The Chief Secretary announced that the comprehensive guidelines would be finalized after consulting with various departments to incorporate diverse perspectives. The framework for these guidelines was developed by outlining recommendations such as conducting regular safety audits in schools and establishing robust medical response protocols for emergency situations. The guidelines further stipulate that schools must maintain a list of hospitals equipped with anti-venom and pediatric treatment facilities, and that the availability of anti-venom should be ensured in hospitals from the taluk level upwards.
