Minister Ganesh Kumar to Return 113 E-Buses, Introduce 150 New Ones Amidst Thiruvananthapuram Dispute

Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar has responded to Mayor V. V. Rajesh regarding the ongoing Thiruvananthapuram City bus controversy, stating that 113 electric buses currently operated by KSRTC could be returned to the Corporation within 24 hours if formally requested. In exchange, the Minister pledged to introduce 150 new buses for the residents of Thiruvananthapuram.

The Minister clarified that the electric buses in question are not solely owned by the Corporation, with 60% being state-owned. He emphasized that KSRTC is responsible for the maintenance of these electric buses, as well as providing conductors, drivers, ticket machines, and workshop facilities.

Addressing concerns about bus operations, Minister Ganesh Kumar asserted that the Kerala government would not restrict residents from areas like Nedumangad, Attingal, Pothencode, and Neyyattinkara from traveling to Thiruvananthapuram or boarding city buses. He challenged the Corporation to manage the operations if they possessed the capability.

The core of the dispute revolves around the 113 electric buses provided to KSRTC as part of the Smart City project in Thiruvananthapuram. The Corporation’s ruling body insists that these buses should operate exclusively within the city limits.

Minister Ganesh Kumar reiterated his stance, stating that if the Corporation submits a written request for the buses, they would be returned within 24 hours. He added that while the Corporation could park the buses at a location of their choice, they would not be permitted to use KSRTC depots. Furthermore, he assured that the 150 new buses promised would operate not only within the city but also extend to areas outside Thiruvananthapuram, ensuring continued service for the public. He also noted that Mayor V. V. Rajesh had not yet formally communicated or sent a letter regarding the issue.
