Wikipedia Edit Sparks Controversy Over Kerala’s Next CM as Congress Leaders Intensify Internal Competition

K.C. Venugopal has found himself at the center of a controversy after his Wikipedia page was edited to falsely label him as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala. While the edit on the open-source platform, which allows public modifications, was swiftly removed, it has sparked significant political speculation amidst ongoing internal discussions within the Congress party regarding the chief ministerial candidate.
With high expectations for a potential change in governance in the state, the Congress party has been in a state of high activity. The race for the top position has led to intense behind-the-scenes maneuvering among senior leaders. While the party managed to present a unified front during the election campaign, preventing overt factional clashes, individual leaders and their supporters have been actively working to bolster their public images.
The Wikipedia incident is being interpreted as a reflection of the competitive atmosphere, with supporters of key contenders—K.C. Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala, and V.D. Satheesan—attempting to highlight them as the most suitable candidates. Leaders are employing various strategies, including the release of promotional videos, songs, and books, to assert their prominence in the public eye.
Ramesh Chennithala’s camp has released a promotional video titled “Jananayakan” (People’s Leader), which highlights his political journey and positions him as the savior of the party during the 2005 internal split. He has also launched a new YouTube channel and a podcast series titled “Kerala Yathra” to discuss the future of the state.
Similarly, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal’s team is in the final stages of producing a documentary about his political career. A song praising him has been released, and his biography is reportedly nearing completion. On World Book Day, Venugopal also launched his book, “Nerinoppam: Porattangal Nilapadukal,” a compilation of his selected speeches from the Legislative Assembly, Rajya Sabha, and Lok Sabha.
Meanwhile, supporters of Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan are preparing a book of his selected speeches. Despite the intense activity from other camps, the Satheesan faction has reportedly decided to maintain a distance from public discussions regarding the Chief Minister post. They are focusing on securing the support of party MLAs and are banking on the backing of alliance partners, including the Indian Union Muslim League, while planning to approach the party high command at the decisive moment.
The competition, marked by the use of AI-generated videos, reels, and digital media campaigns, underscores the high stakes within the party as it anticipates the election results.
