Massive Water Tank Collapse in Thammanam, Kochi; Extensive Damage, Vehicles Washed Away

Kochi: A massive water tank collapsed near Vyttila in Thammanam, leading to a sudden surge of water in the area. The ruptured structure was identified as a drinking water tank belonging to the Kerala Water Authority. The incident occurred around 2 AM.

The collapsed tank had a substantial storage capacity of 1.25 crore (12.5 million) liters. Visuals from the scene suggest the incident resembled a natural disaster, akin to a landslide or flash flood. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. This particular tank is a large-area reservoir situated at ground level.

The force of the water caused significant damage, demolishing house walls and roads. Homes in the vicinity were inundated, and vehicles parked along the roadside were swept away, sustaining considerable damage. Electrical appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines inside flooded houses also suffered damage.

Many residents were slow to realize the gravity of the situation as the collapse occurred in the early hours of the morning while they were asleep. Homes are now filled with mud and other debris. The incident is expected to severely impact water supply to Thrippunithura and other parts of the city. The flow of water was brought under control by 4 AM.
