Thrissur Declares Holiday for Educational Institutions as Orange Alert Issued for Heatwave

In response to an ‘Orange Alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Thrissur district, the District Collector has announced a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, for tomorrow. This decision follows weather forecasts predicting that temperatures in the district could soar to as high as 40°C.

Educational institutions are permitted to conduct classes online in case of urgent necessity. However, the holiday does not apply to scheduled examinations conducted by universities or state boards.

Simultaneously, due to the prevailing high temperatures, the Department of Women and Child Development has decided to suspend pre-school activities in Anganwadis across the state for one week. This measure, taken in accordance with safety warnings from the Disaster Management Authority and health department alerts, will not affect other regular activities of the Anganwadis. Supplementary nutrition for children will be delivered directly to their homes during this period.

Meanwhile, the IMD has also warned of isolated thundershowers accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h across Kerala tomorrow. Authorities have issued comprehensive safety guidelines, urging the public to remain indoors during thunderstorms, disconnect electrical appliances, and avoid open fields, tall trees, and water bodies. Residents are advised to stay away from windows and doors and to avoid using telephones during these weather events. In cases where shelter is unavailable, individuals are advised to adopt a protective crouched position.

The administration has emphasized that the first 30 seconds following a lightning strike are crucial for life-saving measures, and immediate medical assistance should be sought if an incident occurs.
