Taslima Nasrin Pledges to Work for Human Values Until Death

Writer Taslima Nasrin has unequivocally pledged to dedicate her life to upholding human values. Her declaration came during her acceptance speech for the prestigious Essence Global Lifetime Achievement Award.

Presenting the esteemed accolade, Professor T J Joseph shared a poignant sentiment, expressing his joy in bestowing the award upon Taslima with his hand—a hand that had been tragically severed in an attack and later painstakingly reattached. This powerful moment underscored the resilience and profound sacrifices made by both individuals in their respective struggles for justice and freedom. The award itself comprises a significant sum of half a lakh rupees, alongside a distinguished certificate of merit.

During her address, Taslima Nasrin reflected on her prolonged period of exile, a journey spanning 31 years marked by persistent threats. “The threats never end,” she stated, her voice resonating with conviction. She attributed her expulsion from her native Bangladesh to the pervasive influence of religious extremism. Despite the geographical displacement, Nasrin asserted, “Today, my home is my heart. But I will not surrender.” Her words conveyed a fierce determination to continue her advocacy regardless of personal cost.

Nasrin further elaborated on the core tenets of her activism, emphasizing her critique of all religions. “Religion views women as second-class citizens,” she declared, highlighting a central theme in her work. She affirmed her tireless efforts in championing human rights, promoting scientific thought, and advocating for secularism, principles she believes are fundamental to a just and equitable society.

The event also recognized other notable contributors to free thought. Dr. K M Sreekumar presented Arif Hussain Theruvath with the ‘Free Thinker of the Year’ award, accompanied by a prize of Rs. 30,000 and an Essence medallion. The ‘Young Free Thinker of the Year’ award was jointly conferred upon Rakesh V and Prasad Vengara, acknowledging their promising contributions to intellectual discourse.
