Supreme Court Dismisses Mathew Kuzhalnadan’s Plea for Vigilance Probe in Masappadi Case

New Delhi: MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan has suffered a setback in the Supreme Court regarding the ‘Masappadi’ (monthly payment) case. The court dismissed his demand for a Vigilance investigation, stating it would not intervene in the petition. Mathew Kuzhalnadan MLA had approached the Supreme Court seeking a Vigilance investigation into the CMRL-Exalogic transaction. The appeal was filed against the High Court’s order which had also rejected the request for an investigation.
A bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran dismissed the petition. Chief Justice B.R. Gavai stated that courts should not be made a platform for political battles, and political struggles should be waged before voters in elections.
The allegation was that monthly payments were received from CMRL by leveraging the advantage of being the Chief Minister’s daughter. Mathew Kuzhalnadan MLA’s demand for an investigation into this matter was initially dismissed by the Vigilance Court. He then approached the High Court challenging this decision, but the Kerala High Court also adopted a similar stance.
The Supreme Court also criticized Mathew Kuzhalnadan’s petition for alleging that the 1.72 crore rupees paid by CMRL to Exalogic company and Veena Thaikkandy was a bribe given to the Chief Minister. The Supreme Court questioned senior advocate Guru Krishna Kumar, who appeared for Mathew Kuzhalnadan, on how such an allegation could be made.
