Authorities Issue Heat Safety Guidelines for Thrissur Pooram Attendees

With temperatures rising across the district and the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for heatwave conditions, the Thrissur District Collector has urged the public to remain vigilant while attending the Thrissur Pooram.

The District Medical Officer reported that during last year’s festival, approximately 300 individuals sought medical assistance at the health department’s pavilion due to dehydration and other heat-related issues, with 150 of them requiring inpatient care. Given that temperatures are higher this year compared to the last, the Collector emphasized that visitors must take extra precautions to ensure their safety.

To stay safe during the festivities, the public is advised to adopt the following measures:

Hydration is key: Even if you do not feel thirsty, drink water at regular intervals and always carry a bottle with you. It is recommended to consume 7 to 10 glasses of water, including ORS, lemon water, or rice water, before arriving at the festival venue in the morning.

Stay protected: Always wear a hat or use an umbrella and comfortable footwear. Eat fruits with high water content, such as watermelon, to stay hydrated.

Avoid direct sun: Whenever possible, stay in the shade to prevent dehydration and fainting. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or skin ailments, should take special care.

Avoid certain beverages: Refrain from consuming alcohol, carbonated drinks, tea, and coffee during the day, as these can contribute to dehydration.

Clothing and comfort: Wear light-colored, lightweight cotton clothing. Use sunglasses and sunscreen for added protection. Take frequent breaks in shaded areas to allow your body to cool down.

If you experience symptoms such as extreme fatigue, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, or skin redness, immediately move to a shaded area and rest. If you face any physical or mental discomfort, seek assistance from the nearest medical team or ambulance service immediately.
