Kochi Water Metro Model Eyes Expansion: Feasibility Report Submitted for Mumbai Project

Kochi: The Kochi Water Metro, India’s pioneering water metro system, is now set to inspire similar projects in other states. A feasibility study report for launching a Water Metro service in Mumbai, modeled after Kochi, has been submitted to the Maharashtra Government.
The report details the possibility of establishing a Water Metro service that would connect waterways in areas such as Waytharana, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja, encompassing the entire Mumbai Metropolitan region.
The feasibility study report was presented by the consultancy division of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) to Maharashtra Ports and Shipping Minister Nitish Rane. The study covered a comprehensive 250-kilometer long waterway and includes plans for 29 terminals and 10 distinct routes.
Under the guidance of the Central Inland Waterways Authority, KMRL is currently undertaking feasibility studies for Water Metro projects in 21 different cities across 11 states and Union Territories in the country.
If this particular study for Mumbai is approved and KMRL is entrusted with the responsibility for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and subsequent project implementation, it would open up significant opportunities for KMRL, further cementing its expertise in water-based urban transport.
