Kerala Muslim Jamaat Demands Bifurcation of Malappuram District as Population Exceeds 4.7 Million

The demand for the bifurcation of Malappuram district is once again gaining momentum. Following the Muslim League, the Kerala Muslim Jamaat has also come forward with this demand.
Kerala Muslim Jamaat District President Kootampara Abdurahman Darimi stated that the current administrative facilities are insufficient for the approximately 4.7 million people in Malappuram district, and only through bifurcation can development and adequate facilities be ensured for everyone.
Malappuram district accounts for about 14% of the state’s total population, meaning one-seventh of Kerala’s population resides in Malappuram district.
While many other districts in Kerala have an average population of only 8 to 12 lakhs, Malappuram has nearly four times that number, which proponents of bifurcation cite as a major reason.
Considering the number of expatriates, the population will further increase. It is alleged that the funds allocated for such a large population group cannot be effectively utilized under the current circumstances.
Apart from Malappuram, demands for new districts centered around Muvattupuzha and Thiruvananthapuram rural areas are also emerging, but the argument for Malappuram’s bifurcation has a history of many years.
MLA Kurukkoli Moideen has demanded the formation of a new district centered around Tirur. UDF member P. V. Anwar is expected to further intensify these efforts.
Previously, the Malappuram District Panchayat had passed a resolution for this purpose. Additionally, the SDPI has organized protests, including a district-wide hartal, demanding bifurcation.
These discussions gain further significance as the ‘Kerala Yatra’ of the Kerala Muslim Jamaat is set to begin. It is also believed that the existing district hospital, sub-collector’s office, RDO, and education office operating in Tirur will expedite the process of forming a new district.
