Modi @ 75: Meet Puthenkulam Modi, Kerala’s Elephant Named After the Prime Minister

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrates his 75th birthday, an unusual tribute to his name has captured the hearts of elephant enthusiasts in Kerala. In Puthenkulam, Kollam, resides an elephant named Puthenkulam Modi, a star attraction affectionately named after the nation’s leader.
This majestic elephant, originally from Bihar, arrived in Puthenkulam just before a state-wide ban on transferring elephants from other states was implemented. The owner, Shaji, decided to name the elephant Puthenkulam Modi at a time when Narendra Modi was rapidly ascending as a prominent figure in Indian politics. Standing at an impressive 9 feet 5 inches and 38 years old, Puthenkulam Modi has become a beloved fixture at various festival grounds across Southern Kerala.
Despite being slightly shorter in stature compared to some elephants, his striking posture and overall physical beauty set him apart. With 18 nails, he possesses a distinct elegance. A significant factor in his popularity among elephant aficionados in Southern Kerala is his remarkably gentle demeanor.
It is a rare occurrence for an elephant in Kerala to bear the name of a national political leader. Beyond his owner’s personal preference, Puthenkulam Modi’s inherent beauty and calm temperament have greatly contributed to his widespread appeal. It is a common and fascinating sight to see crowds gather at festival venues, eager to catch a glimpse of the elephant named after the Prime Minister and learn more about him.
Much like the name Narendra Modi has grown to signify a formidable presence in national politics, the name Puthenkulam Modi has evolved into a symbol of beauty and serenity among elephant lovers in the southern parts of Kerala.
During a typical festival season, Puthenkulam Modi usually has a demanding schedule of appearances. Currently, he is in a period of recovery following the ‘neerkalam’ (a traditional resting phase after musth) and is diligently preparing for the upcoming festival season, poised to once again captivate and delight his many admirers.
