Biljith’s Organ Donation Gives New Lease of Life to Seven After Tragic Nedumbassery Accident

Biljith Biju (18), a resident of Vattaparambil Mallushery Palamattom house, who sustained severe injuries in a road accident in Nedumbassery, has given a new lease of life to seven individuals through organ donation. Biljith, who was declared brain dead following the accident, had his heart, two kidneys, liver, small intestine, pancreas, and two corneas donated.
The tragic incident occurred on September 2, when a lorry collided with Biljith’s motorbike on the Nedumbassery Kariyad national highway at night. The impact caused the motorbike to lose control and hit a pole. Biljith, critically injured, was immediately rushed to Angamaly Little Flower Hospital. However, on September 12, he was confirmed to be brain dead. Following this devastating news, his family bravely consented to the organ donation.
Despite the profound grief of not being able to save their beloved Biljith, his family finds solace in the hope that his memory will live on through the seven lives he helped save. One of Biljith’s kidneys was donated to Kozhikode Government Medical College, while the other was given to Ernakulam Rajagiri Hospital. His liver, small intestine, and pancreas were transplanted at Ernakulam Amrita Hospital, and his two corneas were provided to Angamaly Little Flower Hospital. Notably, Biljith’s heart was successfully transplanted into a thirteen-year-old girl from Karukon, Anchal, Kollam, during a surgery performed at Ernakulam Lissy Hospital.
The entire organ donation and transplantation process was meticulously coordinated and led by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (K-SOTTO).
Biljith was a bright first-year student at Adi Shankara Engineering College, Kalady. He is survived by his father, Biju Palamattom, mother, Linta, and brother, Bival. His selfless act has brought hope and a second chance at life to many.
