Mullaperiyar Dam Water Level Rises to 134.30 Feet; Tamil Nadu Issues Opening Alert

Thodupuzha: The water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam has reportedly reached 134.30 feet. The water level has risen sharply due to heavy rainfall in the dam’s catchment area. With the strong inflow, Tamil Nadu has issued a warning to the Idukki district administration regarding the potential opening of the dam.
Currently, 6084 cubic feet of water per second is flowing into the dam. However, Tamil Nadu is only drawing 1867 cubic feet of water per second. As per the current Rule Curve, Tamil Nadu can store up to 136 feet of water until June 30. Tamil Nadu has indicated that if the current situation persists, they may be forced to open the 28 spillway shutters.
If the water level continues to rise excessively, Tamil Nadu has decided to open the dam on Saturday. Once the water level reaches 136 feet, water will be released through the spillway. Residents living along the banks of the Periyar River and other low-lying areas have been urged to exercise caution.
