Kerala Weather Update: Cyclone Montha to Bring Thunderstorms and Rain; Orange Alert in Three Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain across Kerala today. Orange and Yellow alerts have been declared in various districts as part of the rain probability forecast for the next five days. Currently, three districts are under an Orange alert, while seven districts are under a Yellow alert.

Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts are currently under an Orange alert, with isolated places predicted to experience very heavy rainfall. Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts are under a Yellow alert, indicating chances of heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm named ‘Montha’. This cyclone is likely to make landfall near Kakinada on the Andhra Pradesh coast, specifically between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, by Tuesday evening (October 28). It is expected to hit with a maximum wind speed of up to 110 kilometers per hour. As a result, heavy rainfall is predicted in the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, and vigilance warnings have been issued in the affected districts.

For Kerala, light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are anticipated over the next five days. The IMD has specifically warned of isolated very heavy rainfall on October 27, with isolated heavy rainfall also possible from October 25 to 28.

An Orange alert has also been declared for the next three hours in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts. In these areas, isolated strong thunderstorms, accompanied by winds reaching up to 40 kmph, are expected. All other districts may experience isolated light to moderate rainfall with winds gusting up to 40 kmph, as per the IMD’s latest update.
