Kerala High Court Revokes Teacher’s Suspension Over Anti-Zumba Stance

Court Directs School Management to Reconsider Action Against TK Ashraf

The Kerala High Court has overturned the suspension of TK Ashraf, a teacher who had taken a stand against mandatory Zumba dance sessions in schools as part of anti-drug campaigns. The High Court has instructed the school management to reconsider its disciplinary action and has specifically ordered that the teacher’s explanation must be heard.

TK Ashraf had informed the court that the disciplinary action was taken without giving him an opportunity to present his side of the argument. His advocate highlighted that the suspension was enacted the very next day after a memo was issued, emphasizing that a response to the memo should have been heard first.

The controversy began when TK Ashraf posted on Facebook expressing his opposition to making Zumba dance compulsory in schools, particularly in the context of anti-drug initiatives. The school management had cited this Facebook post as a violation of rules, leading to his suspension.
