Kerala Health Minister Urges Vigilance Against COVID-19, Dengue, and Leptospirosis

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, has issued a warning urging vigilance regarding COVID-19 cases in the state. She emphasized that individuals with pre-existing conditions and the elderly should wear masks in public places and during travel as a precautionary measure.

During a State Rapid Response Team (RRT) meeting chaired by the Minister, it was also highlighted that due to intermittent rainfall, there is a possibility of an increase in Dengue fever and Leptospirosis cases. The meeting stressed the importance of carrying out prevention activities based on micro-plans.

Currently, 2,223 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state, with 96 individuals actively undergoing treatment. The majority of these active cases are among those with other underlying health conditions. District-wise, Ernakulam has reported 431 cases, Kottayam 426, and Thiruvananthapuram 365. All hospitals have been instructed to conduct COVID-19 tests for individuals showing symptoms.

The Minister underscored the need for continuous vigilance against Leptospirosis. She advised that everyone who has come into contact with contaminated water, including those involved in rescue operations, should take the Leptospirosis preventive tablet, Doxycycline, as per the guidance of health workers. Authorities are directed to identify hotspots, conduct inspections under the Public Health Act, and take stringent action.

Furthermore, caution is advised against waterborne diseases such as Cholera and Hepatitis A, given the potential for contaminated water. The public is strictly advised to consume only boiled and cooled water.
