Vellappally Natesan Alleges ‘Religious Dominance’ in Malappuram, Citing Restrictions on Non-Muslims

Alappuzha: SNDP General Secretary Vellappally Natesan has once again sparked controversy with fresh remarks concerning Malappuram. Speaking to News18, Vellappally reiterated his stance that Malappuram is characterized by “religious dominance” and affirmed his earlier statements regarding the district. He asserted that during Muslim religious programs, not a single shop belonging to other communities is permitted to operate, and that many remain silent on this issue due to fear, a sentiment he claims not to share.
“Other religious communities in Malappuram are compelled to live in accordance with the religious interests of the Muslim community,” Vellappally Natesan stated. He elaborated, “When religious ceremonies are underway, not even a tea shop is allowed to open. They will instigate disputes and ensure everything is shut down. No political leadership possesses the courage to address this issue. While everyone acknowledges this privately, they refrain from vocalizing it. The silence, however, does not validate these actions; there is a need for self-reflection.”
Natesan also launched a critique of the prevailing political dynamics, particularly targeting the Congress party. He claimed that Congress has been “swallowed” by the Muslim League, suggesting that any new enrollment into the Congress party in Malappuram requires the approval of the League. He described the state of Congress as “pathetic” and warned that if the United Democratic Front (UDF) were to assume power, it would lead to a “dire situation.” He further accused the Muslim League of exhibiting arrogance and conceit.
Concluding his remarks, Vellappally Natesan characterized the Muslim League’s operational approach as a “tight and loose” policy.
