Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Thiruvananthapuram, Triggering Widespread Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions

Thiruvananthapuram: Following heavy rainfall, extensive waterlogging has been reported in various parts of Thiruvananthapuram city. Road traffic has been disrupted in areas such as Thampanoor, East Fort, and Pazhavangadi. The Akkulam-Ulloor road also experienced waterlogging, halting traffic. In some parts of the city, the Aamayizhanjan canal overflowed, leading to shops being inundated. The wall of Sree Chitra Research Centre in Poojappura collapsed. Power supply was disrupted in several rural areas.
The road from Pazhavangadi to the railway station via Powerhouse was submerged due to the overflowing Aamayizhanjan canal in that area. Due to the rising water level in the Aruvikkara Dam following heavy rains, shutters one to five of the dam were opened by 15 centimeters each (total 100 centimeters) at 8 AM today. The District Collector advised residents in the vicinity of the dam to exercise caution.
Thiruvananthapuram received heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Notable rainfall figures include East Fort (136 mm), Maranalloor (128 mm), Nemam (133 mm), Thiruvananthapuram City (122 mm), Airport (115 mm), and Pirappancode (107 mm).
Tourism activities in Ponmudi have been temporarily suspended. In Maranalloor, an elderly woman was trapped inside her house due to waterlogging and was rescued by fire service personnel.
Heavy rain also delayed a flight landing as the runway was not visible. A Kuwait Airways flight, scheduled to land in Thiruvananthapuram at 5:45 AM from Kuwait, landed approximately an hour late. The flight attempted to land at 5:45 AM but could not see the runway due to heavy rain. Following instructions from Air Traffic Control, the aircraft circled before finally landing.
Meanwhile, a review meeting was held to discuss the rain-related damages in the district. Ministers V Sivankutty, Mohammed Riyas, Mayor Arya Rajendran, MLA V K Prashanth, and MLA V Joy participated in the meeting.
