CPM Leader Criticizes Media Focus on Youth Congress Leader Sujith, Questions Police Treatment

Thrissur: K. V. Abdul Khader, the CPM District Secretary, criticized the media’s portrayal of a wedding in Kunnamkulam, suggesting it was being covered as if it belonged to a freedom fighter. Abdul Khader voiced his disapproval regarding the wedding ceremony of Youth Congress leader Sujith during the inauguration of a rally and public meeting organized by the Area Committee. This event was part of the CPM’s anti-imperialist day, held in protest against Israel’s alleged attack on Qatar.

Abdul Khader questioned the appropriateness of pampering and offering biryani to an individual who had allegedly assaulted police officers. He highlighted that the person in question was taken into custody only after additional police forces were called to the scene. Despite this, he affirmed that the party’s official stance is that police officers should not resort to assaulting anyone.

Detailing the incident, K. V. Abdul Khader explained that police action was initiated against Sujith V.S. because he was part of a drunken group. He recounted that a four-member group, creating a disturbance under the influence of alcohol on Kanippayur street, was apprehended by local police and placed in a jeep. However, Sujith, identified as a Youth Congress leader, forcibly removed them from the vehicle. The Sub-Inspector naturally resisted, leading to the loss of the SI’s watch and an alleged assault on the police. Following this, the police requested reinforcements, and Sujith was only arrested after more officers arrived. Abdul Khader reiterated his question: “Is it right to expect them to pamper him and buy him biryani after arresting him?” He further disclosed that Sujith is an accused in 11 cases, including charges of assaulting police personnel.

Earlier yesterday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had addressed concerns regarding police excesses within the state. The Chief Minister clarified that only a few isolated incidents of misconduct have surfaced. He assured that action is being taken against the culprits based on the available information and emphasized that no wrongdoing would be condoned on the part of the police. His statement was made during a front meeting.
