High Court Grants Parole to Convicted Father for Daughter’s Lawyer Enrollment

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has granted a five-day parole to a father currently serving a sentence in an attempt to murder case, allowing him to witness his daughter’s enrollment as a lawyer. Justice P. V. Kunhikrishnan issued the temporary parole to the 50-year-old native of Malappuram. The daughter’s enrollment is scheduled for the 11th and 12th of this month, and the father’s parole will be effective from Friday until the 14th.

The court acknowledged that parole cannot be granted under all circumstances and noted that, prima facie, the petitioner was not eligible for parole. However, the court stated that it considered the matter from the perspective of the children. While the petitioner is a convicted prisoner and regarded as a criminal by society, the court emphasized that a father will always remain a hero to his children.

The High Court underscored that it could not disregard the emotions of a daughter. It decreed that the aspiring lawyer should be allowed to enroll in the presence of her father. Nevertheless, the court clarified that this decision should not be seen as a precedent, as the parole was granted specifically due to the unique circumstances of the case.

The parole was granted subject to a personal bond of one lakh rupees and the submission of two equivalent sureties. The petitioner had approached the High Court after his initial parole application was rejected by the jail authorities.
