Rajya Sabha Elections: Will the Left Need BJP’s Help? CPM Faces Crisis

KOCHI: The massive setback in the Assembly elections is now posing a significant challenge for the Left front in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. With only 35 MLAs in the assembly, the LDF finds itself in a paradoxical situation where they might need the support of the BJP to secure the 36 votes required to send even a single member to the Upper House of Parliament.
With a strength of 102 MLAs, the UDF is well-positioned to sweep all six Rajya Sabha seats coming up for election in 2027 and 2028. Under the current circumstances, it will be nearly impossible for the LDF to retain the seats held by V. Sivadasan and John Brittas, whose terms end next April. According to the proportional representation system, a candidate needs a minimum of 36 votes to win when there are three vacancies. Falling short by just one vote has put the Left in a major political fix, potentially allowing the ruling UDF to claim every upcoming vacancy.
