Thrissur Pooram Reaches Fever Pitch with Iconic ‘Ilanjithara Melam’ and Grand Processions

THRISSUR – The cultural capital of Kerala is bathed in rhythmic grandeur as the Thrissur Pooram reaches its zenith with the world-renowned Ilanjithara Melam. Thousands of spectators gathered at the Vadakkunnathan Temple to witness the percussion ensemble, which commenced around 2:00 PM under the masterful leadership of Kizhakkoot Aniyan Marar. A massive contingent of 250 artists participated in the performance, creating a sonic spectacle beneath the iconic Elanji tree.

Earlier in the day, the Madathil Varavu ceremony captivated the crowds. Led by Kongad Madhu, the Panchavadyam orchestra performed for ninety minutes in front of the Brahmaswam Madhom, with the deity of the Thiruvambady temple carried by the tusker Thiruvambady Chandrashekharan.

The festival also marked the historic return of several legendary elephants. The tusker Thrikkadavoor Sivaraju carried the idol of Paramekkavu Bhagavathi, representing the Travancore Devaswom at the Pooram for the first time in 16 years. Meanwhile, the fan-favorite Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran led the Chembukkavu procession, drawing massive cheers from the crowd as he emerged through the Southern Gate.

The festivities began at the break of dawn with the arrival of Kanimangalam Sastha, who reached the Thekkinkadu Maidan before sunrise. This set the stage for a series of constituent processions including Panamukkumpilly Sastha, Karamucku Bhagavathi, and Laloor Bhagavathi. Choorakkottukavu Bhagavathi displayed the largest elephant contingent among the minor poorams, followed closely by Ayyanthole Bhagavathi with thirteen elephants and Neythalakkavu Bhagavathi with eleven.

As the Melam concludes at 5:00 PM, the grand Thekkottirakkam and the vibrant Kudamattom (exchange of umbrellas) will take place. However, in light of the recent fireworks shed accident at Mundathikkode, officials have confirmed that the Kudamattom ceremony will be limited to a duration of 15 minutes this year.
