Sree Chitra Institute Launches ‘Cholederm’ for Affordable, Rapid Wound Healing

Thiruvananthapuram: The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology has unveiled a groundbreaking therapeutic product named ‘Cholederm’. This innovative solution is designed to accelerate the healing of chronic and non-healing wounds, marking a significant advancement in the medical landscape of Kerala.

Cholederm is meticulously developed by extracting acellular matrix from the gallbladders of animals. This pioneering product is the culmination of extensive research initiated in 2008 by a dedicated team led by Professor T.V. Anil Kumar, under the expert supervision of Research and Development Director Dr. P.R. Harikrishna Varma.

The therapeutic efficacy of Cholederm extends to a range of challenging conditions, including chronic wounds stemming from diabetes, leprosy, and ulcers, as well as non-malignant burns. Remarkably, reports indicate successful healing of wounds that have persisted for as long as 17 years through the application of this treatment.

A key advantage of Cholederm lies in its affordability. While comparable imported medications often exceed one lakh rupees in cost, Cholederm will be accessible to patients within a price bracket of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000. This substantial cost reduction is expected to offer considerable financial relief to the general public.

The marketing and distribution of Cholederm are being managed by ‘Alicon Medical Private Limited’, a startup operating within TIMED, Sree Chitra’s Technology Incubation Centre. The product has successfully secured the necessary approval from the Central Drugs Standards Control Organization (CDSCO), ensuring its safety and quality.

K.S. Sunith, Director of Alicon, expressed optimistic projections for the product, stating that the company anticipates a turnover of two crore rupees from Cholederm within the next two years.
