CPM Kollam District Committee Member Suja Chandrababu Joins Muslim League, Eyeing Assembly Candidacy

Kollam: Suja Chandrababu, a prominent member of the CPM Kollam District Committee, has officially joined the Muslim League. Hailing from Anchal, Suja Chandrababu resigned from her position within the CPM’s Kollam District Committee to become a member of the Muslim League. An accomplished MA History graduate, she previously served as a guest lecturer at Punalur Sree Narayana College.

Suja Chandrababu boasts a distinguished political career, having served three terms as the President of Anchal Grama Panchayat and once as the Chairperson of the Anchal Block Panchayat Standing Committee. She was also the former Kollam District Secretary and a State Committee member of the Democratic Women’s Association. Her formal induction into the Muslim League was presided over by the party’s State President, Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, who personally granted her membership.

The 63-year-old Suja belongs to the Ezhava community. Speculation is rife that the Muslim League plans to advocate for at least five assembly seats for non-Muslim candidates in the upcoming elections. Furthermore, the party is reportedly seeking a minimum of two seats in the southern districts of Kerala and is actively considering fielding more women candidates. These factors collectively indicate a strong possibility of Suja Chandrababu securing a candidacy in the Kollam district. Historically, the Muslim League has enjoyed multiple victories in Eravipuram but contested from Punalur in the last election, where their candidate Abdurahiman Randathani was defeated by a margin of 37,057 votes.

There are also reports suggesting a potential seat swap, with the Muslim League exchanging Punalur for Congress’s Chadayamangalam constituency this electoral cycle. The Muslim League has a limited history of fielding women in Assembly elections, having only done so twice before. Qamarunnisa Anwar contested from the Kozhikode Second Constituency in 1996, losing to Elamaram Kareem by 8,766 votes. More recently, Noorbeena Rasheed sought the mandate from the Kozhikode South Constituency in 2021, where she was defeated by Ahmed Devar Kovil by 12,459 votes.
