Rahul Easwar Denied Bail in Mamkootathil Cyber Defamation Case

Social activist Rahul Easwar, currently in custody for allegedly defaming the complainant in the sexual assault case against Rahul Mamkootathil, has been denied bail. Easwar has been remanded to police custody until tomorrow evening.

Easwar was arrested on Sunday after the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police registered a case against him. The charges stem from allegations that he defamed on social media the woman who filed a sexual assault complaint against Mamkootathil. Police stated that the case was registered based on the woman’s complaint that her photo was circulated on social media.

In his bail application, Rahul Easwar argued that he had not revealed the complainant’s identity, as alleged by the police. He also claimed that the arrest procedure was improper, noting that a notice was served only just before he was taken into custody.

Police countered these arguments, asserting that Rahul Easwar had previously been involved in defaming complainants in similar cases. They also presented videos purportedly showing him defaming complainants in sexual assault cases.

Meanwhile, Rahul Easwar is reportedly continuing a hunger strike in Poojappura Jail. Sources indicated that he refused food and juice upon being taken to jail, stating, “He is continuing his hunger strike, just as he did during the Sabarimala issue.”

Deepa, Easwar’s wife, alleged that the police arrived at their home without prior notice. “We informed the court that no notice was received. These are all fabricated cases. It is still unclear which part of the video was cited to deny bail,” she said. Deepa added that they are currently consulting with lawyers regarding their next legal steps. She further stated that although the initial charges were bailable, non-bailable sections were added during the night. “Police may request custody. We will make further decisions after meeting Rahul. He has never done anything to hurt anyone,” she concluded.
