Booth Level Officer Dies by Suicide in Kannur Amidst Election Duty Stress

A Booth Level Officer (BLO) tragically died by suicide at Ettukudka in Payyannur, Kannur. Aneesh George, a peon at Kunnaru AUP School, was discovered hanging on Sunday morning. His family has alleged that severe work pressure related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) duties was the cause of his death.

There are unconfirmed reports that Aneesh George had previously lodged a complaint with the District Collector regarding the work-related stress he was experiencing as a BLO. Following his death, the Chief Electoral Officer has initiated an inquiry, requesting a detailed report from the District Collector on the incident.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Kerala commenced on November 4, 2025, with its enumeration phase. This comprehensive, month-long exercise, mandated by the Election Commission of India, aims to develop a highly accurate voter list. The ultimate objective is to publish the final voter list by February 7, 2026. During this critical period, key personnel like Booth Level Officers are specifically relieved from their regular duties to dedicate their full attention to SIR-related tasks. The enumeration phase is scheduled to conclude on December 4, 2025. The draft roll, following the enumeration, is slated for release on December 9, 2025, with the final list’s publication set for February 7, 2026.
