Kerala Weather: Thunderstorm and Light Rain Expected; Districts on Alert
Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of strong rain accompanied by thunderstorms expected in Kerala today. While no specific rain warnings have been declared for any districts for the next five days, there is a possibility of light rain across all 14 districts today. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted, which signifies precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
The IMD further announced that isolated light rain is likely in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts of Kerala over the next three hours.
**Safety Guidelines**
Thunderstorms pose significant dangers, threatening human and animal life, electrical and communication networks, and household appliances connected to electrical conductors. Therefore, the public is advised to take the following precautions from the moment dark clouds begin to appear. It is crucial not to neglect these precautions, as lightning may not always be visible.
* As soon as the first sign of lightning is observed, immediately seek shelter inside a safe building. Remaining in open spaces substantially increases the risk of being struck by lightning.
* During periods prone to strong winds and potential thunderstorms, ensure all windows and doors are closed. Avoid standing near openings like doors and windows. It is best to remain inside the building and minimize contact with walls or the floor.
* Disconnect household electrical appliances. Proximity to electrical equipment should be avoided during a thunderstorm.
* Refrain from using landline telephones during a thunderstorm. However, mobile phone usage is generally considered safe.
* If the sky is overcast, playing in open spaces and on terraces, including for children, should be avoided.
* Do not stand under trees during lightning. Vehicles should also not be parked under trees, as they can attract lightning strikes.
* If caught in a vehicle during a thunderstorm, remain inside it. Keep hands and feet inside the vehicle. Vehicles generally offer a safe environment during lightning. Avoid traveling on bicycles, motorcycles, tractors, and similar open vehicles during a thunderstorm, and seek refuge in a safe building until the storm passes.
