Father Dies by Suicide on Son’s Choroonu Day Amidst Mounting Debt in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: A 35-year-old man, Amal Krishnan, a resident of Perayathupara in Vithura, tragically died by suicide on Thursday, November 7, the same day his son’s ‘Choroonu’ (first rice-feeding ceremony) was being held. The incident, believed to be driven by significant financial debt, occurred around 8:30 AM.

Amal Krishnan was found hanging inside an old building situated near the ‘Lamsia’ turf in Perayathupara, a business he co-owned with six friends. His family discovered his body after he failed to arrive at the nearby Guru Mandiram, where the traditional Choroonu ceremony for his son was underway. Despite immediate efforts to rush him to the hospital, Amal Krishnan had already passed away.

Authorities recovered a note from the scene, which is believed to have been written by Amal. The note reportedly indicated that substantial financial liabilities were the primary reason behind his drastic step. Investigations reveal that Amal Krishnan’s turf business had accumulated debts amounting to lakhs of rupees.

Vithura police have registered a case regarding the incident and have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death. The tragedy has cast a pall of grief over the family and local community, particularly as it unfolded on a day meant for celebration.
