Three Opposition MLAs Suspended from Kerala Assembly Over Assault on Chief Marshal

Thiruvananthapuram: Three opposition Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have been suspended from the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The disciplinary action was initiated following allegations of assaulting the Watch and Ward staff and causing injury to the Chief Marshal during the ongoing session. The suspended MLAs are M. Vincent, Roji M. John, and Saneesh Kumar Joseph. Minister M. B. Rajesh formally presented the resolution for their suspension in the Legislative Assembly.
In his resolution, Minister M. B. Rajesh asserted that the opposition members had gravely violated parliamentary decorum. He detailed that the Chief Marshal sustained injuries in the alleged assault and subsequently required surgery. According to the Minister, the opposition had consistently disregarded parliamentary procedures since the session resumed on Monday, October 6, 2025, thereby fostering a hostile environment within the House. He further accused them of assaulting and physically harming security personnel, including women, shouting provocative slogans deemed inappropriate for the dignity of the Assembly, rushing towards the Chief Minister, and making derogatory gestures.
The Minister’s resolution provided a detailed account of the events, stating: “Since the recommencement of the Assembly session on October 6, 2025, opposition members have been obstructing parliamentary proceedings and repeatedly violating parliamentary decorum, thereby creating an atmosphere of terror within the House. The opposition adopted an extraordinary approach by boycotting even the meeting convened by the Honorable Speaker to create an environment conducive for the smooth conduct of Assembly proceedings. As part of this, security personnel, including women, were assaulted and physically abused the other day.”
The resolution continued, highlighting the continuous disruption: “They continuously obstructed the smooth functioning of the House, displayed banners covering the Chair’s face, ignored the Chair’s directives, shouted provocative slogans unworthy of the Assembly’s dignity, and rushed towards the Honorable Chief Minister.”
Describing the escalation of events on the day of suspension, Minister Rajesh added: “As part of the continuous series of attacks, today, from the start of the Assembly proceedings, opposition members became more provoked, made derogatory gestures towards the Chair, ridiculed the House, illegally operated the bell, which should only be used as per rules, multiple times, shouted slogans, and then attempted to trespass onto the Chair’s dais. When security personnel tried to prevent this, they were physically attacked. As a result, the right hand of Assembly Chief Marshal, Shri. Shibu, has been severely injured. Doctors at Medical College Hospital have advised surgery for him. This House strongly condemns the severe breach of discipline by the opposition members.”
Concluding the resolution, Minister Rajesh stated: “In this situation, this House concludes that Assembly members Shri. Roji M. John, Shri. M. Vincent, and Shri. Saneesh Kumar Joseph have violated the special privileges of the House and the Speaker by severely injuring the Chief Marshal, who is responsible for the security of the House, in violation of Assembly rules, procedures, precedents, and the Chair’s directives. Under these circumstances, I present a resolution to suspend Assembly members Shri. Roji M. John, Shri. M. Vincent, and Shri. Saneesh Kumar Joseph from membership of the House for the remaining period of the current session, as per Rule 2150 53 of the Code of Conduct appended as Annexure II to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The House decides accordingly.”
The suspension of the three MLAs underscores the escalating tensions and a significant breach of conduct observed within the Kerala Legislative Assembly during recent sessions.
