Toddler Dies After Gate Falls on Him While Grandmother Was Closing It

Alappuzha: An 18-month-old child, who was undergoing treatment after being injured when a gate fell on him while his grandmother was closing it, has died. The deceased is Ridhav, son of Akhil Maniyan and Aswathy. The accident occurred on the morning of the 22nd at 11 AM at Aswathy’s ancestral home, Pazhaveedu Thekke Athithara house.

Due to Aswathy’s fever, her parents had gone to Akhil’s house in Vaikom on the morning of the 22nd. They returned to Aswathy’s house in Alappuzha by car around 11 AM with Aswathy and the child. The accident happened within minutes of their arrival. Aswathy and her father, Prasad, got out of the car and entered the house.

Aswathy’s mother attempted to close the sliding gate to prevent Ridhav from going onto the road. She did not see Ridhav standing behind it. As she was closing the gate, it slipped off its rail and fell onto both her and Ridhav.

Aswathy and her father worked together to pull both of them out from under the gate. Employees from a nearby temple also rushed to help. The child sustained a head injury, while the grandmother did not suffer serious injuries. The child was immediately taken to Alappuzha General Hospital.

Due to the severity of the head injury, the child was later transferred to Vandanam Medical College Hospital. A surgery was performed. The child, who was in the ICU, passed away on Wednesday night around 8:30 PM. After the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the relatives.
