Cheriyanad Bhaskara Karanam Murder Case: Convict Sherin Among 11 Granted Prison Release in Kerala

Governor Approves Government's Recommendation for Remission After Detailed Review

Sherin, a convict in the high-profile Cheriyanad Bhaskara Karanam murder case, has been granted prison release. She is among 11 prisoners who have received remission of their sentences, a decision approved by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar based on a government recommendation. The remission applies to a total of 11 individuals across three separate cases.

Earlier, the state government had recommended Sherin’s release with sentence remission. However, this recommendation faced hurdles due to reports of her frequent paroles and alleged clashes with fellow inmates, even causing disturbances within the jail after the initial recommendation was made public.

Following these issues, Raj Bhavan introduced a new, more detailed form requiring comprehensive information on each prisoner. This form demanded specifics about their crime, sentence, parole history, and behavior while incarcerated. The government then refiled its recommendation along with these thoroughly completed forms. The current directive applies to those sentenced to life imprisonment who have completed 14 years in jail.

Sherin, along with three other co-accused, had murdered her father-in-law, Bhaskara Karanam, inside their home in 2009.

The other ten individuals who received sentence remission were involved in two separate cases of drunken brawls in Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram, where they caused harm to neighbours and relatives. Each of these cases involved five accused.
