Kerala Schools Mandated to Read Malayalam Newspapers Daily for Quality Education

In a significant move to ensure educational quality, the Kerala government has issued a directive under its Academic Master Plan, mandating that students in all schools across the state read a Malayalam daily newspaper every day. This initiative aims to promote newspaper reading among students.
As per the directive, students must not only read the newspaper but also discuss their reactions to the news. It is crucial to ensure that they read with clear pronunciation. Beyond newspapers, the government has also advised that schools provide opportunities for children to read weekly and monthly magazines. To facilitate this, these publications should be made available in school libraries. Students are encouraged to borrow at least one book from the library each week, read it, and engage in discussions about it.
Schools can organize creative expressions based on the books read. Students are also required to prepare notes about the books they have read and share them with others. Additionally, schools can organize book fairs for children and invite prominent citizens for discussions and interactions. The government directive also emphasizes encouraging children to speak English without hesitation.
Furthermore, beyond English, schools are directed to conduct activities that promote reading and speaking in other languages such as Hindi, Arabic, Urdu, and Sanskrit. English films should also be screened for children in schools. The Master Plan also includes a government directive for schools to develop a plan to improve their standards over the next two to three years.
