Deep Depression Intensifies into Cyclone Senyar; Light Rain to Continue in Kerala; Alert Issued

Thiruvananthapuram: A deep depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal has now intensified into Cyclone Senyar. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning predicting light rain across Kerala today, November 27. While no specific district-level rain alerts have been issued for today, the forecast for the next five days includes yellow alerts for various districts, indicating a likelihood of significant rainfall across all 14 districts of the state. Heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.

Currently, a robust low-pressure area is positioned over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, extending across Southeast Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean near the equator. This system is anticipated to track north-northwestwards and strengthen into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. Further intensification is expected over the subsequent 48 hours, with the system projected to continue its north-northwestward movement, heading towards the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts via the Southwest Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, the deep depression previously located over Malaysia and the Malacca Strait has intensified into Cyclone Senyar and made landfall in Indonesia. It is presently situated off the coast of Northeast Indonesia. This cyclonic system is forecast to move west-southwestwards, maintaining its intensity until the morning of November 27, after which it is expected to gradually weaken and shift eastwards over the following 24 hours. Kerala can anticipate light to moderate rainfall over the next five days, with isolated heavy showers particularly likely in Thiruvananthapuram district today.
