Three Dead in Kollam After Bus Carrying Sabarimala Pilgrims Collides with Auto-Rickshaw

KOLLAM: A devastating road accident in Anchal, Kollam, early this morning claimed the lives of three individuals, including two young women, when an auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a bus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims. The incident, which occurred around 1 AM near Mavila Junction on the Anchal-Punalur road, has sent shockwaves through the local community.

The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Akshay, the auto-rickshaw driver and a resident of Thazhamel in Anchal. Also tragically killed were 21-year-old Jyothi and 16-year-old Shruthi, both passengers in the auto-rickshaw. Shruthi, a native of Karavaloor, was reportedly Jyothi’s relative, and the auto was taking her home.

According to preliminary reports, the auto-rickshaw was traveling from Anchal towards Karavaloor when it collided with a bus transporting Sabarimala pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh. The force of the impact resulted in severe damage to the auto-rickshaw and critical injuries to its occupants.

Emergency services were immediately alerted, and the injured were swiftly transported to a nearby private hospital in Anchal for urgent medical attention. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Akshay, Jyothi, and Shruthi succumbed to their injuries.

Anchal police have initiated a thorough investigation into the accident. A case has been registered, and legal proceedings are underway to ascertain the exact cause of the collision and determine any liabilities. Authorities are examining all possible factors, including road conditions, driver fatigue, and adherence to traffic regulations, as part of their inquiry.

The tragic loss of three young lives has cast a pall over the region, particularly as it involved pilgrims traveling to Sabarimala, a significant spiritual journey for many. The accident highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons and late-night travel on arterial routes.
