Study Reveals Men Account for 79% of Suicides in Kerala

A study conducted by the Economics and Statistics Department’s Ernakulam District Office has revealed that the vast majority of suicides in Kerala are committed by men. According to the study, 79% of all suicides in the state are by men, while only 21% are by women. The findings are based on data collected from 2020 to 2023.

The study report indicates that suicide rates are higher in South Kerala compared to North Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam districts record higher suicide rates compared to other districts. These five districts account for 41% of all suicides in Kerala.

Among men who committed suicide in the state, the majority were aged between 45 and 60 years. However, the situation is different for women, where most suicide victims were above 60 years of age.

The report also points out that suicides are more prevalent among employed individuals compared to the unemployed. Within the employed group, daily wage earners and those working in private establishments account for a higher number of suicides. The full report will be released on June 30 at Kakkanad Civil Station, coinciding with National Statistics Day celebrations.
