Sports Minister Asserts Transparency in Kaloor Stadium Renovation Sponsor Selection

PALAKKAD: Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman announced today that the selection of the sponsor for the renovation of Kaloor Stadium was conducted through a transparent process, adhering to existing government orders. He clarified that the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) had issued a press release yesterday, detailing all related matters, and that there was no ambiguity in their statements.

The Minister further explained that a technical officer from the Argentina team, along with state government officials, had inspected the stadium. Significant deficiencies were identified in fire and rescue facilities, as well as general security arrangements. Abdurahiman expressed confidence that the renovation works would be completed swiftly, enabling the stadium to secure FIFA approval and host international matches.

The renovation efforts for the Kaloor International Stadium commenced following an earlier announcement that the Argentina football team, including superstar Lionel Messi, would play in Kochi. The sponsor had committed to investing ₹70 crore for the refurbishment. Initial work included the felling of several trees in front of the stadium, construction of a low wall, and metalling of the parking area.

However, questions have now arisen regarding the continuation of the stadium’s renovation plan after it was reported that Messi would no longer be coming to Kochi. Concerns have been raised about the lack of clarity surrounding the master plan and the contractual terms for the stadium’s redevelopment. Member of Parliament Hibi Eden has also reportedly questioned the GCDA regarding these controversies related to the stadium’s renovation.
