Rawada Chandrasekhar Appointed as New Kerala Police Chief

The Kerala government has selected Rawada Chandrasekhar as the new State Police Chief. This decision was made during a special cabinet meeting. Currently, Rawada Chandrasekhar serves as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He was recently appointed as the Security Secretary in the Central Cabinet by the Union Government. Hailing from West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh, Chandrasekhar was the second name on the shortlist submitted to the state government by the UPSC.
Apart from Rawada Chandrasekhar, the three-member shortlist included Nithin Agarwal, the State Road Safety Commissioner, and Yogesh Gupta, the Head of Fire Force. A 1991-batch IPS officer, Rawada Chandrasekhar has service until 2026. If appointed as the Police Chief, he will receive an additional year of service. Chandrasekhar had previously informed the government of his interest in returning to Kerala if offered the DGP post.
Rawada Chandrasekhar served as the Kannur ASP during the Koothuparamba firing incident. He has been appointed to the vacancy created by the retirement of the current Police Chief, Shaikh Darvesh Saheb. Rawada Chandrasekhar will be the 41st DGP of the state. He had gone on central deputation in 2008 when he was serving as a DIG in Kerala. The state government had also sent the names of ADGPs Suresh Raj Purohit and M.R. Ajith Kumar to the UPSC for consideration for the DGP post.
