Premkumar Criticizes Congress Leadership on Stage, Hints at Joining Party

Thiruvananthapuram: Actor and former Film Academy Chairman Premkumar delivered a sharp critique of the Congress leadership from the stage of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee’s (KPCC) ‘Samskara Utsav 2026’. He pointed out the disproportionate number of people on stage compared to the audience, urging the Congress to address this imbalance. He began his address by stating, “That is your freedom.”
Premkumar utilized the platform to articulate his clear stance on the prevailing political landscape in the country. He emphasized the critical need for unfettered freedom of expression and the ability for individuals to voice their opinions without fear. He further warned that a communal majority, rather than a political majority, poses a significant threat to democracy and is indicative of fascist tendencies.
His appearance at the Congress event follows his public expression of dissatisfaction over his unannounced removal from the position of Film Academy Chairman. Premkumar had taken to Facebook to lament that he was not afforded the same consideration as poet Sachidanandan, labeling the treatment as a “double standard.”
Strong indications now suggest that Premkumar is poised to collaborate with the Congress. He recently held a phone conversation with AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. Discussions are reportedly active within the Congress party regarding his potential candidacy from the Kazhakoottam constituency in the upcoming assembly elections.
Adding to the political intrigue, senior CPI(M) leader Kadakampally Surendran visited Premkumar’s residence after reports surfaced of his impending departure from his current affiliations. However, the meeting did not materialize. Sources close to the developments indicate that Premkumar, now completely estranged from the Left front, is expected to formally accept Congress membership in the near future.
