Part of Sunken MSC Elsa-3 Ship’s Container Discovered Off Kovalam Coast

Thiruvananthapuram: A part of what is believed to be a container from the MSC Elsa-3 ship, which sank on May 25, has been discovered underwater off the coast of Kovalam. This marks the first time a container’s presence has been found underwater since the vessel’s sinking.

The container part was located after a two-day search operation, initiated by information provided by clam divers working near Kovalam Ashok Beach. The section was found embedded in the sand amidst underwater rock formations, which are considered a continuation of Kovalam’s ‘Mukkam Mala’. The number recorded on the recovered container is TGHU 99 1951[5].

The extensive search operation was conducted jointly by Friends of Marine Life, Thiruvananthapuram, and Scuba Divers, Kochi. Further investigations are currently underway to ascertain more details regarding the discovery of parts of the sunken vessel. It is noteworthy that the Navy had previously conducted multiple searches for containers after the ship went down, but their efforts had not yielded any findings until this recent discovery.
