Newborn’s Finger Severed Due to Medical Negligence in Thrissur Hospital

THRISSUR: A five-day-old newborn’s finger was tragically severed due to alleged medical negligence at a private hospital in Thrissur. The distressing incident involved the baby girl of Jithu and Jishma, residents of Pannithadam.
The mishap occurred on Wednesday morning when the baby was being transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for an antibiotic injection. During the removal of a plaster from the infant’s hand using a blade, her thumb was accidentally cut, according to the parents.
Relatives of the baby claim that hospital authorities initially attempted to conceal the severity of the injury, stating it was merely a minor cut. It was only upon a direct inspection by the family in the NICU that they discovered the baby’s finger was nearly severed. Furthermore, the family alleges that the infant did not receive adequate medical attention for several hours, from approximately 5:30 AM when the injury occurred until the doctor arrived at 10 AM.
Following the hospital’s refusal to provide a written assurance acknowledging their lapse, the parents filed a formal complaint with the Kunnamkulam police. Authorities have registered an FIR and initiated an investigation into the matter. As of now, hospital officials have not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
