Mother and Daughter Found Dead in Thiruvananthapuram; Marital Distress Suspected

Thiruvananthapuram: The suicide of a mother and daughter by consuming cyanide in Kamaleswaram is suspected to be due to the daughter’s marital breakdown and the associated burden of humiliation. Sajitha (54) and her daughter Greema S. Raj (30), both residents of Kamaleswaram, were found dead inside their home.

A note found near the bodies explicitly states that Greema’s extreme distress over being abandoned by her husband was the reason for their suicide. Sajitha, in a message sent to relatives before her death, also mentioned that her daughter’s husband left her after living together for only 25 days.

Relatives rushed to their home after a message stating, “We are going to die by consuming cyanide,” was shared in a family group, only to find the two deceased. Their bodies were discovered on a sofa inside the house, with their hands intertwined. Police also recovered a glass, believed to have been used to mix the cyanide, from near the bodies. Sajitha’s husband, N. Rajeev, a retired Deputy Director of Agriculture, had passed away recently, which had added to the family’s emotional distress.

Greema’s marriage to B.M. Unnikrishnan, a college lecturer in Ireland, took place six years ago. Relatives allege that despite providing over 200 sovereigns of gold and property as dowry, the couple barely lived together for even a month. The family was deeply devastated when Unnikrishnan, who recently returned to India, expressed his unwillingness to continue the marriage. Police have intensified their investigation into the incident.
