Mother and Daughter Die by Suicide After Husband’s Alleged Torture in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: Reports indicate that the tragic suicide of a mother and daughter by consuming cyanide in Kamaleswaram was driven by the cruel mental torture inflicted by the husband. The profound distress caused by husband Unnikrishnan abandoning Greema, claiming she brought bad luck, reportedly prompted Sajitha and her daughter Greema to take their own lives. Unnikrishnan, a PhD student in Ireland, allegedly abandoned Greema a mere 25 days after their marriage.

Relatives have stated that Unnikrishnan believed his persistent inability to complete his PhD, despite years of arduous effort, was a consequence of Greema bringing bad luck. It is reported that recently, during a post-funeral ceremony in their hometown, he publicly insulted Greema and her mother in front of several relatives. When Greema approached him to bid farewell, he cruelly retorted, “Who are you? I don’t need you anymore.” Relatives further testified that the unbearable humiliation inflicted caused physical distress to Sajitha, the mother, which rapidly propelled them towards their desperate act.

Greema was married off with a substantial dowry, including 200 sovereigns of gold, a house, and other properties. Despite this, Sajitha had conveyed her immense shame and inability to cope with her daughter being abandoned in a WhatsApp message to relatives. Police have since recovered Sajitha’s note, which explicitly attributes their death to Unnikrishnan’s alleged torture.

Both Sajitha and Greema reportedly used cyanide that was stored by Greema’s father, Rajeev, a former officer in the agriculture department. Rajeev himself had passed away just a month prior to this incident.

Following the shocking incident, Unnikrishnan reportedly attempted to flee abroad but was apprehended by the police at Mumbai Airport. After the completion of post-mortem examinations, the bodies of Sajitha and Greema were cremated.
