Moolamattom Powerhouse to Close for One Month; State to Lose 780 MW of Electricity Daily

The Moolamattom Powerhouse, a crucial component of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project, is slated for a complete shutdown for one month. This closure, commencing from November 11, is necessitated by the scheduled replacement of seals for generators 5 and 6.

The month-long cessation of operations at the Moolamattom Powerhouse is projected to result in a daily reduction of 780 megawatts of electricity in the state. Despite this anticipated shortfall, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has indicated that a potential power crisis is unlikely. This assessment is based on the expectation that electricity previously supplied to states such as Delhi, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh during the monsoon season will be returned to Kerala through a power exchange mechanism. Currently, the water level in the Idukki Dam stands at 2385.74 feet.
