Monsoon Intensifies in Kerala : Widespread Rain and Heavy Rainfall Warnings Issued

Thiruvananthapuram: The monsoon is becoming active across Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of widespread rain over the next week. The state is expected to experience widespread rainfall for the next seven days.

The IMD has specifically forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall from June 14 to 16, and isolated very heavy rainfall from June 12 to 16. Furthermore, winds with speeds of up to 50-60 km/hr are likely over Kerala from June 14 to 16.

Alerts Across Districts

Rainfall alerts have been issued for all districts starting tomorrow (Friday).

  • For tomorrow, Orange Alerts have been declared for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.
  • All other districts will be under a Yellow Alert tomorrow.
  • The forecast predicts extremely heavy rainfall on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 50-60 km/hr, are also expected over Kerala from Saturday until Monday. The IMD attributes the intensifying rainfall in the state to strong westerly winds in the Arabian Sea, influenced by Typhoon Wutip in the South China Sea and a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal.

Due to the likelihood of strong winds and adverse weather conditions, fishing has been banned off the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep until Monday. According to the IMD’s preliminary forecast, the period from June 13 to 19 is expected to receive more rainfall than usual for this time of year.
