Man Awarded ₹92,000 Compensation for Cow Delivering Half the Promised Milk

Kollam: A man who purchased a cow has been awarded ₹92,000 in compensation after the animal produced only half the amount of milk promised. The Kollam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission issued the order following a complaint that the cow, guaranteed to yield 12 litres of milk daily, only produced six litres.

The Commission’s order came in response to a petition filed by Ramanan, a resident of Sudha Vilasam in Madathinapuzha, Kulakkada. Ramanan had purchased the pregnant cow through a broker for ₹56,000. The cow calved on March 11, 2023. However, despite milking it for three months, he never received more than six litres of milk per day.

Ramanan informed the sellers about the discrepancy, but they neither responded nor were willing to take the cow back. He subsequently filed a complaint with the police, but as no resolution was reached, he approached the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

The Commission ordered a total compensation of ₹92,000, which includes ₹56,000 for the price of the cow, ₹26,000 for mental distress, and ₹10,000 for court expenses. If the amount is not paid within 45 days, an additional 9% interest will be levied. Advocate Praveen P. Poovattoor represented the petitioner.
